Roketsu unveils new winter kappo tasting menus and refreshed interiors in Marylebone relaunch

Japanese restaurant Roketsu, on New Quebec Street in Marylebone, has introduced two new six-course menus available throughout January. The restaurant, known for its kappo-style dining, presenting the new offerings as part of a broader relaunch that began in autumn last year, aiming to bring a renewed interpretation of kappo to the London dining scene.

The two tasting menus – the Roketsu Classic Winter Kappo (£150 per person) and the Roketsu Prime Winter Kappo (£200 per person) – feature a progression of dishes beginning with refined appetisers and leading to charcoal-grilled items prepared over binchōtan (white charcoal), followed by nigiri sushi and concluding with a Matcha Basque Cheesecake. Starters include Miso Monaka (wafers filled with miso-marinated foie gras), Cornish Crab Chawanmushi and a selection of Japanese mushrooms. Raw options feature Hamachi Yuzu, while nigiri selections include Wagyu Sukiyaki Gunkan and Otoro Tartare Gunkan. The grilled section offers dishes like Cornish White Fish with nori sauce and Japanese Wagyu Beef with yuzu oroshi. The Prime menu includes upgrades such as Japanese A5 Wagyu, Diver Scallop with Uni and Aburi Otoro with Caviar. Wine and sake pairings are also available at additional costs, ranging from £65 for non-alcoholic options to £200 for premium pairings. The list features over 500 wines, including rare vintages and a wide selection of sake representing all 47 prefectures of Japan.

Roketsu’s approach to kappo dining is based on interaction between chefs and guests, allowing diners to shape the flow of their meal according to personal preferences. While the menus are structured, guests are encouraged to engage with the chefs and tailor their experience. The culinary team crafts dishes daily, drawing on seasonal ingredients sourced from both the UK and Japan. Fish is supplied by fishermen in Cornwall using the ikejime method, ensuring freshness and quality, and is complemented by artisanal Japanese ingredients.

To complement the food selection, Roketsu’s interior has also undergone changes, with a seven-metre hinoki counter and new table seating on the ground floor, as well as a more relaxed dining space and private room on the lower ground floor. The design, by Kyoto master builder Sotoji Nakamura, incorporates natural materials such as hinoki, chestnut and cedar.

The new menus are available for dinner from Monday to Saturday and for lunch on Thursdays and Fridays.
