Mitsu brings Tokyo market brunch and live tuna carving to Shoreditch with new weekly series

Mitsu, the modern izakaya and nightlife venue in Shoreditch co-founded by Steven Bonnington, has launched a new weekly Japanese brunch experience. The series, which began on 30th May, runs every Saturday from 12pm to 4pm and is split into two formats: the weekly Mitsu Market Brunch and a monthly tuna-carving event known as Big Fish Energy. Following the restaurant’s opening earlier this spring, the idea is to bring elements of Tokyo market culture to the East London dining scene.

The standard Mitsu Market Brunch, priced at £65 per person, is led by executive chef Aaj Fernando and draws on the food stalls and backstreet eateries of Japan’s capital. The menu follows a market-style presentation, beginning with snacks and moriwase for the table before moving into a sequence of Japanese street-food-inspired dishes served for sharing. Guests are offered unlimited patties and rice alongside larger sharing plates and dessert. There’s also a selection of drinks to add on for those feeling particularly indulgent.

On the last Saturday of each month, the vibe changes to Big Fish Energy, priced at £165 per person. The experience centres on the live ceremonial carving of premium Bluefin tuna, followed by a tasting and one hour of unlimited champagne. Guests then continue with the full Mitsu Market Brunch menu. The monthly event also includes karaoke and live entertainment from performance collective The Bitten Peach, the UK-based Queer Asian cabaret group founded in 2019, which represents more than 150 artists working across drag, burlesque, dance, comedy, music, spoken word and circus. According to the restaurant, Big Fish Energy aims to combine Japanese culinary tradition with the atmosphere of Shoreditch nightlife, shifting from a relaxed lunch into a livelier occasion as the afternoon progresses.

Mitsu opened earlier this year and describes itself as a modern izakaya inspired by the social dining and listening bar culture of East Tokyo. The venue’s food menu, overseen by Fernando, focuses on robata cooking and Japanese izakaya technique, while drinks include collaborations with Kanpai Sake Brewery and Suntory Whiskey. The space also hosts DJ sets and late-night programming, doubling as both a restaurant and a nightlife venue.
