Trying season five trailer promises fresh chaos for Nikki and Jason’s hard-won family life
Apple TV+ has unveiled the trailer for the fifth season of its acclaimed comedy Trying, with Esther Smith and Rafe Spall returning as Nikki and Jason for another chapter in their unconventional family story.
Premiering on 8ᵗʰ July, the new season picks up after the couple finally achieved the family they fought so hard for, only to discover that parenthood comes with its own complications. This time, their settled home life is thrown into turmoil when Kat (Charlotte Riley), the biological mother of Princess (Scarlett Rayner) and Tyler (Cooper Turner), unexpectedly arrives on their doorstep.
Since debuting in 2020, Trying has quietly become one of television’s most heartfelt comedies, earning praise for its warm humour and honest portrayal of love, family and the often unpredictable paths that bring people together. Season five looks set to continue that tradition, balancing emotional upheaval with the show’s trademark optimism and charm.
The returning ensemble cast includes Darren Boyd, Siân Brooke, Celia Imrie, Phil Davis, Gbemisola Ikumelo and Colin Morgan.
Adding another distinctive voice to the series, Irish singer-songwriter Orla Gartland provides the soundtrack for the new season, contributing original music throughout the eight episodes. Her forthcoming single At the End of the Day features in the newly released trailer.
Created and written by Andy Wolton and produced by BBC Studios, Trying returns to Apple TV+ on 8ᵗʰ July, with new episodes released weekly through 26ᵗʰ August. The first four seasons are available to stream now.
