Jasmine Jobson stars as pioneering boxer Ramla Ali in Anthony Wonke’s In the Shadows

True Brit has announced that In the Shadows, the latest feature from Emmy-winning and triple BAFTA-winning filmmaker Anthony Wonke, will be released in UK cinemas on 30^th October.

Inspired by the true story of Ramla Ali, the film stars BAFTA winner Jasmine Jobson (Top Boy, Bird) as the Somali refugee who secretly pursued boxing before becoming the first Somali British female professional boxing champion. The drama charts Ali’s journey as she navigates family expectations, faith and identity while forging a career that would eventually see her make history as Somalia’s first Olympic boxer outside of athletics.

Best known for acclaimed documentaries including The Director and the Jedi, Ronaldo and The Accidental Spy, Wonke directs from a screenplay by Ursula Rani Sarma (Bodkin), with Ali and her husband Richard Moore serving as executive producers. The cast also includes Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders, Last Breath) as Moore, alongside Gershwyn Eustache Jnr (Andor, The Gentleman) as Ali’s boxing coach Clinton.

Produced by Lee Magiday (The Favourite, The Lobster) and Madeleine Sanderson (Mouth Full of Golds), In the Shadows blends a sporting underdog story with a coming-of-age drama, exploring themes of identity, belonging and self-determination through Ali’s extraordinary rise.
