Sky documentary Groomed: The Truth Behind the Lie revisits Ellie Williams case

Sky has revealed that three-part documentary series Groomed: The Truth Behind the Lie will premiere on Sky and streaming service NOW on 2^nd August, revisiting the high-profile Ellie Williams case and examining allegations of grooming in the Cumbrian town of Barrow.

The series explores the events surrounding Williams’s allegations, which prompted national attention before police concluded they were false. Williams was subsequently convicted of perverting the course of justice and sentenced to eight and a half years in prison. Drawing on three years of reporting and research, the documentary asks whether the focus on disproving Williams’s claims obscured wider allegations of abuse within the town.

Produced by Sandpaper Films in collaboration with Full Story Films and drawing on reporting from Sky News’ Unreliable Witness podcast, the series features survivor testimony alongside first-time interviews with members of Williams’s family. It also examines allegations made by other women in Barrow, the institutional response to grooming claims and the broader political debate that has surrounded such cases in recent years.

Directed by Ceri Isfryn and Katie Hindley, Groomed: The Truth Behind the Lie follows Sandpaper Films’ documentaries The Betrayed Girls and A Deadly American Marriage.
