Reading the site

You can read The Upcoming without an account. Our servers keep standard technical logs (IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time) to keep the site secure and working. We do not sell this information or share it with advertisers.

Cookies

Readers get only the cookies the site needs to work. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. If you play an embedded video or post from YouTube, Instagram, Facebook or X, that service may set its own cookies under its own privacy policy.

If you subscribe to our mailing list, we store your email address and subscription status on our own mailing system so we can send you the newsletter. Every email has an unsubscribe link, or you can write to us and we will remove you.

Emailing us, contributing and applying

When you email us, pitch a story, apply to join the team or ask about advertising, we keep your message and contact details to reply and manage our work with you. We delete applications that do not go ahead within a reasonable time.

Google and YouTube data

We use Google’s YouTube API only to manage The Upcoming’s own YouTube channel. We do not collect, store or share data from any other Google user. The use of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. Our use of YouTube is also covered by the YouTube Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy. You can remove the app’s access at any time in your Google account’s security settings.

How long we keep data and who sees it

We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purposes above. Only our editorial team and the services that host our site and email can access it, and they act on our instructions.
