Roo Panes at the Borderline

You may know Roo Panes as one half of Burberry’s recent Autumn/Winter campaign, in which he is seen with actress Gabriella Wilde. The British fashion house seems to have an affiliation with Panes, who also appears on the Burberry Acoustic video sessions.

Originating from Dorset, Panes is quietly touted as one of the UK’s brightest talents, on course to be a household name. This weekend gave us the opportunity to see him headline at The Borderline and showcase his musical talents. Taking the stage, Panes addressed the crowd, worried his performance would act as a come down following the raucous bands that had supported him. He did perhaps have a point, despite the quality of the music he produced, the crowd appeared to find it hard to settle.

The venue, not ideal for this type of show, was packed mainly with his adoring female fan base who gave Panes the attention he deserved. The folk singer-songwriter was joined on stage by violinist Georgie Harris and cellist Joanne Sy, who enriched the sound of his songs. A highlight was the intricate play between the viola and Panes’ competent acoustic finger plucking. His stage persona is dominated by his linear vocal, which he performs with sincerity and point blank delivery. Songs such as Ran before the Storm, Know Me Well and Indigo Home lit up the stage, and during the performance of Different Child, Panes incorporated the crowd by splitting it into two, and encouraging the audience to sing along to a two part harmony.

Roo Panes is undoubtedly talented and has a successful future in front of him. His songs take you away from the reality of our busy lives and transport you to a place of tranquillity. Unfortunately his approach was wasted on the noisy venue, however he was still able to engage the senses of those susceptible to his deep rooted emotions.
