Sea Meadow Designs: beauty captured in glass

Sea Meadow Designs: beauty captured in glass

We’ve all seen ships in glass bottles but have you ever seen nature captured in a tiny glass globe. At Sea Meadow Designs they do just that.

Sea Meadow Designs was created by Cathy Wickham, originally from South County Dublin. She studied textile design at the National College of Art and Design in the city and over the years has worked in many different roles.

However, creating and designing items was what made her happiest. In her spare time she sold and exhibited jewellery ad framed fibre art pieces. With this strong desire to create, Cathy put her energy into starting her own business.

Cathy spent a lot of time on beaches, in sand dunes, up hills and in fields to develop a love of the natural world. Her jewellery captures real hand dried tiny flowers, feathers and seashells in glass beads. Until you physically see these pieces you can’t truly understand how beautiful they are. For example, these pink rose petal and white baby’s breath earrings are so sweet and if you’re going to a wedding they will be perfect. You can have your own little garden with this botanical teardrop necklace.

In the future Cathy hopes to add more jewellery lines and to develop different products to include drawings, framed fibre art and home décor items. Cathy is clearly inspired by nature and loves all the tiny details and patterns found in the natural world. She clearly sees something in nature that we don’t. “I’m like a Magpie. I’m drawn to and want to surround myself with the beautiful shiny things. The little things that make your heart skip a beat: wonderful colours, the soft fluffy feathers, iridescent threads, shapes and patterns on the tiny shells and sparkly beads. It gives me such a thrill to know that my customers have loved wearing the jewellery as much as I have enjoyed making it!”

Cathy is definitely onto a good thing with the jewellery and if she creates pieces for the home that are just as beautiful then she is on to a winning formula.
