Fashion lovers adore items that are individual and edgy. At The Individual there are jewellery labels galore to feast your eyes upon.

The Individual is an online jewellery boutique, which seeks out the very best of UK independent jewellery design talent. It showcases a selection of elegant and timeless pieces with a design “edge” that you won’t find anywhere else. The boutique was born out of a passion for both jewellery and design and focuses on special jewellery, which will last a lifetime.

One of the designers that The Individual has showcased is Jane Gowan. Jane graduated in 2009 with a degree in Jewellery and Metal Design and in 2010 she set up her own label. She has always been creative, even as a small child, and it was when she started at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design she realised that jewellery was the route for her.

When she creates her jewellery she initially designs on paper surrounded by her inspiration; the drawings are then translated into computer renders, printed in wax and cast in sterling silver. Each piece carries a trusted Edinburgh hallmark and is finished by Jane in her Dundee studio. Jane considers her jewellery to be classic, and she explains why: “I think JG pieces have a compelling and tactile aesthetic. A sculptural quality and narrative underpins every collection and each combines both contemporary and classic styles, smaller everyday pieces and bold statement designs. I’m fascinated by sequences that have evolved into creating stackable pieces within my current Captain collection. My work is not trend-driven and the pieces I create are designed to be enjoyed for a lifetime, not just one season.”

Jane’s pieces are quite simple but the detail on them is gorgeous. The gold Bessie ring has an interlocking detail and it’s amazing to consider how Jane must have created it. Her work has even been worn by Emeli Sandé. Emeli wore Jane’s gold Betty earrings on her last album cover. If you love jewellery that is simple but still speaks volumes, then you will adore this Amelie necklace from Jane’s Matchstick collection.

What is even more fantastic is that Jane was shortlisted for New Designer of the Year at the UK Jewellery Awards. It’s a magnificent achievement for Jane, and when you check out her work you’ll understand why.

Jane is just one of the many artists showcased on The Individual’s website. Head over to the website now and you could use a special discount that The Individual has laid on for The Upcoming readers. Just type in THEUPCOMING10 at the checkout; it can be used on any purchase, not just on Jane Gowan’s items.
