Scripts for Supper: The Wind in the Willows at Stepney City Farm

Scripts for Supper blend the theatrical and culinary world together seamlessly in their immersive production of The Wind in the Willows, drawing the audiences into the world of Mole, Ratty, Toad and Badger with ease. With a cast of five talented performers, music and, of course, delectable food, the company breathes fresh life and energy into the beloved childhood tale, making for an evening of theatre that is both heartwarming and delicious.

The evening is nicely paced, with the arrival of food (delivered by the characters themselves) serving as a break from the narrative, allowing time for the performers to chat with those in the audience, adding to the immersive nature of the show. What’s more, the menu, designed by MasterChef finalist Juanita Hennessey, is carefully crafted to fit the theme of the production, with each course having its own place in the story – from the bubble and squeak pasties to the butter biscuits. 

Annie McKenzie’s direction of the Kenneth Grahame classic has focused on the humour within the novel and, in many cases, has brought it to new heights – characters are exaggerated, the humour occasionally slapstick and the experience somewhat bizarre. As a result, The Wind in the Willows would prove a delightful evening for families – with just enough adult humour buried within it to keep the parents entertained too!

The performance (and dining!) takes place outdoors – so audiences are advised to wrap up warm – and though slightly chilly on opening night, being outside only adds to the performance; the spectators and characters are surrounded by nature. Both the staging and props are minimal, requiring theatre-goers to use their imagination, but the strength of the performances allows for easy suspension of belief.

Scripts for Supper have created an evening of lighthearted, comedic and entertaining theatre that leaves the audiences with full bellies and the feeling of being a child again. Their immersive The Wind in the Willows is witty, bright and engaging and, given that the production is new, will only go from strength to strength.
