Only Kylie could launch her latest album, Disco, with this much energy and style – and on the day the US election result was finally announced, the show was elevated from spectacular distraction to pure joy! The singer offered an extravagant, professional and endlessly entertaining performance that never lowered the tempo or tempered the party atmosphere. Simply put, it was perfect, and illustrated Kylie’s complete awareness of what people needed amid modern woes.

Dressed in a gold jumpsuit and silver heels, the night opened with Magic, an effortlessly catchy track from latest album Disco. It was followed by the older In Your Eyes, which was delivered surrounded by green lasers and back-up dancers who looked as though they had stepped off the set of The Matrix and added berets for a final touch. At times Kylie looked like a hologram, at others, a silhouette in a Bond opening sequence. Watching Dance Floor Darling was like being simultaneously immersed in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby and Saturday Night Fever. Sparkly, sequined outfits and complementary lighting blurred the movements on stage into rays of golden light, creating a psychedelic hallucination of the golden age of partying. The 70s vibe continued with Real Groove, another brilliant dance number that’s certain to be requested at clubs when life finally returns to normal.

Kylie’s performance of Slow was iconic, the audience delighted to “come here and dance”; All the Lovers that Have Gone Before was a great opportunity for a singalong. The singer’s decision to incorporate older hits did not feel like a move to supplement the material from her latest album: the songs from Disco held their own. The beat and energy of Last Chance were enhanced by the wild choreography of the backing dancers and their star – and, of course, a storm of gold confetti. Concluding with a return to opening number Magic, this time “under the disco ball,” was another stellar decision from this consummate showgirl.

Kylie was the ultimate, glittering tour de force and it is not an exaggeration to say that very few performers could offer a virtual show like this. It was perfectly choreographed, intimate in the same way a party is, and utterly uplifting. Her latest album is perhaps one of her best, and until fans can enjoy the party live, we will all just have to listen to it on repeat.
