28°-50° by Night: A Roaring Twenties live jazz venue in contemporary London

28°-50° by Night: A Roaring Twenties live jazz venue in contemporary London

The 28°-50° family has grown. With popular established outletes in Covent Garden, Chelsea and Marylebone, they now add a late-night dining spot nestled next door to the 28°-50° Marylebone Wine Workshop and Kitchen. The venue is in the basement of the building and it effortlessly represents an immersive escape from London, offering blues and live jazz music from far-flung cities like New Orleans and Paris.

The vibe is very Roaring Twenties, an era pulsing with progress and anticipation where life must be drunk with bold and greedy sips. Stylish but understated decor – including a stage with a brick wall at the back, contrasting elements of velvet and polished concrete, cage lights, secluded tables and elegant bar seating – complements the music and wine and keeps it front and centre.

By Night has an impressive wine list with a strong focus on French offerings. The Ayala Brut Majeur champagne is fresh, fruity and perfect paired with light bites such as artichoke tempura, smoked almonds or hummus. A 2020 sancerre is surprisingly good for its age, while the 2016 barolo would be able to fully express itself in a few years down the line. Those interested in exploring rare vintages can request the fine wine list, on which the prices are very reasonable.

Executive chef Julien Baris has put together an à la carte menu comprised of modern European dishes, with quality produce at the centre of each meat, fish and seafood plate, as well as a tempting selection of desserts (the Chocolate Madeleine is a must-try: delicate and playful).

The  live music is engaging without being overwhelming, an integral part of the harmonious ambience. It’s all about the atmosphere: late evening, a symbiosis of jazz and dry martinis, neon light filtering through the darkness, truffle arancini (crispy on the outside with a soft core), pocket lanterns for menus, the muffled voices of people at the tables…  Where are you now? Central London or New Orleans, Paris or New York?  One thing is clear: you are in the right place to enjoy life in all its versatility.
