Studicanal sets UK release for The Outrun with Saoirse Ronan leading an acclaimed cast

Studiocanal has announced the eagerly awaited UK and Irish theatrical release of The Outrun, a film adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s critically acclaimed memoir. Directed by Nora Fingscheidt, known for System Crasher, the film is scheduled to hit cinemas on 27th September 2024.

The Outrun will feature a stellar cast, including four-time Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan, alongside Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu, BAFTA winner Stephen Dillane and Saskia Reeves. The movie has already garnered critical acclaim at its debuts at Sundance and the Berlin International Film Festival earlier in the year, setting high expectations for its release.

Adapted for the screen by Fingscheidt in collaboration with Liptrot, the feature presents a searingly honest drama about addiction, survival and the healing power of nature, set against the backdrop of the wild northern Orkney Islands. Ronan portrays the protagonist, 29-year-old Rona, who, after a decade in London, returns to her home in the Orkney Islands. Wrestling with sobriety and loneliness, Rona confronts her past, finding solace and strength in the rugged beauty of her surroundings.

Amy Liptrot’s memoir, upon which the film is based, has been widely celebrated, winning the 2016 Wainwright Prize and the 2017 PEN Ackerley Prize. A Sunday Times Top Ten Bestseller, the book has been translated into 15 languages, selling over 110,000 copies in the UK alone, and was added to publisher Canongate’s modern classics list, The Canons. Stay tuned for more information as the release date draws nearer.
