The historic German Gymnasium in London’s Kings Cross, once the site of the city’s Indoor Olympic Games in 1866 and 1908, has unveiled its new cocktail menu titled The Spirit of the Games. This summer, as the sporting world turns its eyes towards Paris, the Grade II listed venue offers travellers and locals alike a proposal rich in sporting history. The restaurant and bar, known for its gold-standard service and exquisite Mittel-European cuisine under the guidance of Executive Chef Alexander Thiel, seeks to celebrate its heritage with this latest offering, meticulously crafted by Bar Manager Anna Gaglione.

German Gymnasium, originally England’s first purpose-built gymnasium and a pivotal gathering spot for London’s German community, has transitioned into a dining haven, preserving its architectural charm and historical significance. The venue’s decor reflects its past, with elements like cast-iron hooks and laminated wooden trusses from the original design by Edward A. Gruning still present. The new cocktail menu is designed to honour the legacy of the venue, with creations like THE GYMNAST, a mix of Flor de Cana rum, lemon & ginger syrup, pineapple and aloe cordial, and prosecco, THE PIONEER, prepared with smoky Mezcal, Aperol, Marmalade and Grapefruit bitters, and THE ACROBAT, made with Sauvelle Vodka, Lemon Balm wine, Suze and Vetiver. Each one of the available concoctions encapsulate an anecdote or broader story related to the building’s history.

Anna Gaglione, who honed her skills in Italy before taking the helm at German Gymnasium’s bar, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the establishment’s already renowned cocktail offerings. Her drinks list draws inspiration from the venue’s sporting past and the achievements of the athletes who once trained there. For those preferring outdoor dining, the German Gymnasium also features a terrace à la carte, perfect for enjoying the summer weather amidst the architectural beauty of the surrounding area.

The German Gymnasium is open throughout the week, offering breakfast to dinner services, including a sophisticated seasonal menu upstairs in the restaurant.
