James Graham’s Punch to hit London after acclaimed Nottingham run

James Graham’s latest theatrical masterpiece, Punch, is set to enthral London audiences at the Young Vic Theatre come March 2025, following a highly praised and sold-out stint at the Nottingham Playhouse. This Olivier Award-winning playwright, renowned for works such as Best of Enemies and Sherwood, brings to the stage a gripping adaptation of Jacob Dunne’s memoir, Right From Wrong, a tale that delves deep into tragedy, forgiveness and societal reform. The play, directed by Adam Penford, the Artistic Director of Nottingham Playhouse, is scheduled to run from 1st March to 12th April 2025.

The narrative of Punch unfolds the life-altering journey of Jacob Dunne, a young man from Nottingham whose impulsive actions one evening lead to devastating consequences. The aftermath sees him navigating a path of self-discovery and redemption, prompted by a poignant meeting with the parents of his victim. The original cast, including Julie Hesmondhalgh, Tony Hirst and David Shields, reprise their roles, promising a powerful rendition of this moving story.

Graham expressed his deep connection to the play, stating, “This play and the incredible story it tells could not mean more to me…I’ve never not watched without ugly crying and can’t wait to share it with a wider audience.” Penford also shared his enthusiasm about bringing the production to a broader audience, highlighting the play’s resonance with current societal issues and its profound impact on viewers.

Kwame Kwei-Armah, the Young Vic’s Artistic Director, praised Punch as a heartwrenching yet hopeful narrative that mirrors humanity and has stirred conversations even in political realms. His endorsement underscores the play’s significance and its potential to influence both local communities and national discourse.

In addition to the captivating performances, the Young Vic Theatre will host post-show discussions with Jacob Dunne and other guests, offering audiences an opportunity to delve deeper into the themes presented on stage. These conversations promise to extend the impact of Punch beyond the theatre, sparking further dialogue on justice, forgiveness and societal transformation.

Punch not only represents a pivotal moment for Graham and the cast but also marks a significant addition to the Young Vic’s repertoire, known for its commitment to presenting thought-provoking and socially relevant productions. As the play prepares to make its London debut, it stands as a testament to the power of storytelling in fostering empathy, understanding and change.
