Sam Ryder at Wembley Arena
Sam Ryder graced the stage at the OVO Arena Wembley on Thursday for the final stop on his Road to Wembley tour. After much anticipation, red lights and smoke became our view as Ryder came to the stage, supported by an impeccable string quartet who began the instrumental for The Sun’s Gonna Rise.
There’s much to be said about the artist’s presence – he owned the stage, making full use of the vast amount of space, which certainly made for an enjoyable, high-energy experience. The contribution of instruments used by the band in each song (drums, bass guitar, keyboard) added positively to his performance, providing an array of sounds to focus on.
Ryder showcased his extensive vocal range and ability in the popular love song Whirlwind, demonstrating a seamless blend of high and low notes. Better Man was definitely a highlight – there was a visible connection between Ryder and the audience as he engaged in a call and response, with the crowd singing “Oh your love is making me a better man” back to him.
Fans witnessed an emotional reunion between Ryder and his first guitar teacher (Kelvin Pratt) as he joined the singer on stage with his bass guitar for the performance of Go Steady – a beautiful moment indeed. Most people were out of their seats with their hands in the air and their heads bopping when Mountain began. It’s no surprise that this track is a fan favourite with its infectious beat and uplifting lyrics.
There was a great variety in the set, with a combination of tracks from his most recent album, Heartland and older projects such as The Sun’s Gonna Rise EP; this meant that there was something for everyone. The show was nothing short of a success: the crowd shouted for more, which Ryder proudly delivered through two extra songs, before bringing the electric night to a close.
