“I like to take the audience on a journey to cyberspace”: Sophie Grey on retro electro, supporting Duran Duran and bringing her live show to BST Hyde Park
Sophie Grey is a self-described “retro electro” artist, her sound bringing, as it does, “aspects of familiarity and unfamiliarity.” A classically trained pianist, she writes and produces all of her own music, blending nostalgic pop influences from Toto to Karen Carpenter with shimmering electronic production, all brought to life through immersive theatrical performances complete with a keytar, robot companion and fantastical cyberpunk costuming.
We caught up with the fast-rising artist hot off the back of an otherworldly set at BST Hyde Park 2026, where she shared the bill with the likes of Duran Duran, Scissor Sisters, Mel C and Nile Rodgers & Chic. Grey reflected on one of the biggest gigs of her career so far, from surviving the blistering heat with the help of a diamond-encrusted water bottle to sharing the stage with some of her musical heroes. She also discussed what retro electro really means to her, the influences behind her distinctive sound, why producing all of her own music has become such an important part of her creative identity, and the inspiration behind her latest single, Lunar Highs (Hands Go Up). We also chatted about taking fans on a journey into her “cyberspace” world, why she loves performing Video Killed the Radio Star for modern audiences, and what lies ahead as she prepares to share the stage with Boy George and Culture Club, Grace Jones and more iconic artists this summer.
