Solange takes on Glastonbury
Guys, we’re as big of a Beyoncé fan as anyone else, but there’s a younger Knowles taking the fashion and music worlds by storm that just happens to be our current obsession and closet-envy. With a taste for eye-catching looks, the singer-songwriter, actress, model, dancer, DJ, fashionista and mother of one Solange stands as inspiration for all of those overlooked, under-appreciated younger siblings fighting to find the light in the shadows of an elder one.
Despite the assumed struggles between S and B, they both agree to be completely incomparable. They both have such distinct sounds and styles that they can’t even rightfully be placed into the same genre. While B is undoubtedly the queen of pop R&B, S has dabbled in everything from reggae to mo-town.
Solange celebrated her 27th birthday this week in style by making her Glastonbury debut in signature bold prints and floor-sweeping braids. Solange’s dance/new wave album True was co-written by Dev Hynes and features the legends of Chromeo and Pharrell, giving the youngest Knowles some serious indie cred. We’ve had the single Losing You on repeat since its release in November, and still can’t stop dancing to the Madonna-sounding super jam.
Beyoncé will always be “Queen B,” larger than life and untouchable. Solange, on the other hand, is the weird, quirky little sister. She marches to the beat of her own drum and, despite her lack of mainstream appeal, is far more relatable and presumably lots of fun to be around. Solange’s undeniably unique personal style of retro silhouettes in mixed prints and bright colours can’t be pulled off by just anyone, but she makes it work.
