Josh Ritter at the Village Underground | Live review

Josh Ritter played with The Royal City Band at the Village Underground this week, celebrating the release of his new album The Beast in its Tracks. The album’s gentle fragility is reflected in Ritter’s sweet and charming performance.

The Beast in its Tracks is a personal album for Ritter, inspired by his divorce from singer-songwriter Dawn Landes. He has said that he was “just trying to keep ahead of the heartbreak” as he wrote the songs for this record. This has resulted in honest music that is a joy to listen to. Despite the album’s themes, there is no bitterness reflected in Ritter’s lyrics or performance. Rather, he plays with energy, spirit and excitement.

The Village Underground is an exciting venue that matches the charm of Ritter’s music. His clear, crisp voice reverberates through the high ceilings and envelops the crowd. The Royal City Band’s incredible skill and energy is amazing to watch on this intimate stage. As an ensemble, they play with a drive and joy that is infectious.

Ritter manages to strike a perfect balance between passion and fun, heart and humour. He is playful with the audience, who absolutely adore him. His sweet, truthful singing during the slow songs is intoxicating, while the more up-tempo tracks are a delight to behold.

Ritter’s soulful music is beautiful, but what makes him stand out as a performer is his ability to connect with the audience. He is funny, open, and delightfully spontaneous. The crowd can’t help being drawn in by his candid and gleeful charm.

Josh Ritter and The Royal City Band perform with vitality and enthusiasm. Though the stories Ritter tells through his music are at times painful, his smile never falters. His joy in performing is incredible to watch, matched only by the pleasure in listening to him sing.
