Kisa the Kitty Candle: The perfect accessory for a pyromaniac

Kisa the Kitty Candle: The perfect accessory for a pyromaniac

Icelandic designer Thorunn Arnadottir has many projects within her name, all of which can be found on her amazing personal website. She has an MA in design products from the Royal College of Arts in London and a BA in product design from the Iceland Academy of the Arts in Reykjavik. She has exhibited all over the world and won the “Best Product” award in “Accent on Design” at the NY International Gift Fair, for her innovative Sasa Clock, in 2010. Her most recent project is possibly one of the oddest things we’ve seen here at The Upcoming, but we really, really want one. Introducing Kisa, the PyroPet.

Kisa the PyroPet stands at nearly seven inches tall and burns for almost 20 hours. The wax has been cast into a geometric cat outline, with a string wick running from head to a ball of yarn at the foot. She comes in pink or black, with or without a jar. Very simple, very sweet. Just a slightly quirky candle to have as a talking point in your living room. However, they haven’t been nicknamed “The devil’s pet” for nothing. These candle critters have a dark little twist.

As the wax melts away, an eerie and angular little metal skeleton is revealed. The first thing you see is a sharp pair of ears, two evil little eye sockets and vicious looking fangs. From cute kitty candle to scary skeleton, we love this wonderful piece of Internet oddity. Up until recently, these PyroPets have been unavailable for purchase, but Arnadottir and co-designer Dan Koval have finally figured out how to mass-produce their candles.

These morbid home accessories can now be found at swish.com, for a mere $34 (approx. £20). They are available for pre-order and will be officially released in March. Aside from the morose fun of this product, it does behave as a playful little reminder that candles, now so commonly used for effect, once had a vital function and that it is never sensible to take fire lightly as an element.
