Brixton brewery teams up with Natoora for single-farm passion fruit kombucha

MOMO Kombucha, the Brixton-based brewery run by husband-and-wife Josh and Lisa Puddle, has launched a seasonal passion fruit kombucha in collaboration with the produce supplier Natoora. Amadora’s Passion Fruit Kombucha uses organic fruit grown by a farmer in Andalusia, and sales will help fund Natoora’s programme supporting young farmers.

The drink costs £4.50 per 330ml glass bottle. From its launch date, it will be available at Ocado, Selfridges, Whole Foods Market, GAIL’s Bakery, Planet Organic, Zapp and Natoora, as well as through MOMO’s website. It is certified organic by the Soil Association.

The fruit is grown by Amadora, a fourth-generation farmer in Mairena del Alcor, near Seville. Commercial passion fruit is often picked early so that it can withstand transport. Amadora does not harvest from the vine. She lays nets beneath the plants and waits for the fruit to fall of its own accord, which indicates that it is fully ripe. This method produces fruit that is less acidic and sweeter, with more aroma.

The passion fruit is combined with MOMO’s raw kombucha, a fermented tea drink containing live cultures, which the brewery makes using traditional methods. The result has a sweet and sour with a tropical character.

Passion fruit has two short harvest windows each year, from December to March and from July to August. Natoora says its direct relationship with Amadora allows the fruit to be collected at its ripest for the chefs, producers and customers it supplies.

The drink is the brewery’s first seasonal flavour made with Spanish-grown fruit and the first to be made with a female producer.

Josh Puddle, founder of MOMO Kombucha, said: “We’re incredibly excited about this collaboration with Natoora; our first Spanish-grown seasonal flavour, and our first working with a female producer. Amadora’s passion fruit is exceptional in every way: sweet, vibrant and bursting with tropical character. As always, the brewers have done an amazing job capturing the flavour of this exotic fruit in its purest form.”

Natoora supplies fruit and vegetables to restaurants and home cooks. It focuses on preserving seed varieties, growing techniques and flavours that it considers threatened by industrial farming and supermarket supply chains. Sales of the new kombucha will contribute to the company’s Farm Fund, which supports the next generation of farmers in adopting more sustainable practices.
