The Rails at Rough Trade West

The Rails at Rough Trade West | Live review

Following the announcement of their debut album Final Warning – Rough Trade’s album of the month –  The Rails played an instore show at Rough Trade West. One half of married duo The Rails is Kami Thompson, whose parents are Linda and Richard Thompson, renowned British folk-rock artists who are signed to Island Records.

The duo began their acoustic set with Bonnie Portmore, their first single. James Walbourne’s ability to play the guitar tastefully shone alongside his wife’s versatile style, especially in such an intimate venue. His fluid plucking accompanied by beautiful entwining harmonies embraced the audience; both Thompson and Walbourne projected their voices effortlessly across the store – a natural acoustic setting where their true talent could be displayed.

Mid-set, Linda Thompson jumped into the crowd, prompting the audience to clap along to William Taylor, as she looked on proudly while faintly singing and softly swaying in awe of her daughter and son-in-law. After the song she asked her daughter whether she remembered to apply mascara, with Walbourne exclaiming: “MUUUUUM!”. Much like their music, the warming personal banter clearly fits with this act and their songs.

Although it was an entirely acoustic set, they did have an accompanying mandolin player throughout to add a delightful folky twang to the songs.  The pair performed Habit as their last song of the night and, as they shifted closer to each other, so ended the cheerful evening of foot-thumping folk. The Rails are set for great things.
