Nick Mulvey – First Mind

Nick Mulvey – First Mind | Album review

First Mind: what a perfect title for this debut album from an up-and-coming artist who undoubtedly has a successful campaign ahead of him. The 28-year-old London native released this work in May, featuring a sound and style safe to call his own.

The album predominately features Mulvey on acoustic guitar, with mellow vocal melodies and harmonies over what are very simple yet paradoxically complex-sounding guitar melodies. Mulvey features other vocalists to provide ambient harmonies and other instruments, adding more atmosphere to the songs with stringed instruments and electronic drums.

The overall style and sound has a very melancholy, folky, chilled vibe to it, utilising influences from Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, reggae, acoustic/classical guitar and ambience. It’s something you’d enjoy listening to while laying on the beach trying to forget about the weather London has to offer.  It’s perfect for disregarding your stress, and just enjoying the even flow of catharsis.

There is a ukelele playing in the single hit Cucuruc, a funky reggae ballad that gets the listener moving. Meet Me There is another standout track as it’s more upbeat in comparison to the rest of the album.

This is a fantastic debut to start off what should be a long and successful career for Nick Mulvey. The music is well composed and mixed, fresh and original. Support this newcomer: check this album out for sure.
