Meow Meow at London Wonderground

Meow Meow at London Wonderground | Live review

“Okay, throw them! … This is the part where you’re supposed to throw the flowers… did nobody bring flowers?” Meow Meow asked the crowd, a bewildered expression dancing across her glittering face. We were sitting in the magical Speigeltent with all eyes on Miss Meow, the elusive cabaret star and international singing sensation, as she introduced the evening, promising sexiness, sequins, satire and possibly even the splits.

Wonderground, now in its third year at the Southbank Centre, is Londons playground of wonder and curiosity, and post-post-modern showgirl Meow Meow is the feline intimate the world has been waiting for. She dazzled the audience with her hypnotic voice and shimmering gown before having it stripped off her by the stage hand (it had only been hired for the opening song, you see) and improvised in the most professional manner when the venue just couldn’t live up to her exceptional standards (cue revolving stage and dancing Barbie dolls). The songstress had us touched by a rendition of Patti Griffin’s Be Careful and Amanda Palmer’s Missed Me and even treated us to songs she had “been forced to write herself” (I know!).

After a night of raucous laughter, Lady Meow went out with a bang and being the true hero of showbiz that she is, crowd surfed her way over to the bar for a well deserved glass of whiskey (the Speigeltent really ought to get that trapeze fitted). For an evening of guaranteed laughs and a chance to stroke Meow Meow up to the knee, we urge everybody to roll up and pay this sequinned sex bomb a visit for a show you will never forget, even without the illegal photo.
