To Rococo Rot at Rough Trade East
The Berlin-based trio To Rococo Rot enter Rough Trade East’s small scene built up in the far corner in the shop. The customers earlier browsing the vinyl albums and listening to the staff picks of the month curiously gather around the record store’s stage. Having released their first album in 1996, this group sure is savvy performing on stage, but there is still a speck of nervousness playing over their faces. Maybe it is the unusual layout of this stage that makes them appear slightly absent-minded.
Their experimental sound waves stretch out and capture everyone in hearing radius. More and more people are coming in from the street, and soon there is a whole little audience listening to To Rococo Rot. The band put on a heavy bass, layering with curtains of synth to smooth the enthralling repetitive patterns in the songs. This band may have been around for a while, but they still sound very fresh. The two brothers Robert and Ronald Lippok and bandmate Stefan Schneider show through the soundscapes they are architecting great skill as musicians. These boys know what they are doing, and they are going to keep doing it.
As many as seven albums were joined by another one, the critically-acclaimed Instrument in April this year, and it looks like more are coming. To Rococo Rot are hardly newbies on the stage, but are soundly refreshing. This combined with great musicianship and skill makes a great gig that surely leaves Rough Trade East’s customers more than satisfied.
