Set before the events portrayed in the five instalments of the Transformers saga, the story of the lonely Cybertronian Bumblebee unfolds in a small Californian town. Charlie Watson, played by Hailee Steinfeld, soon discovers the real identity of her secondhand car, who was taking refuge in the junkyard where the girl unsuspiciously bought him. While getting to know each other, the two realise they are being watched and are wanted by Sector 7, a government agency.

The latest addition to the American franchise is an action-packed spin-off and prequel, featuring a lot of CGI but also offering some emotive scenes on friendship and independence, with the sympathetic Bumblebee at the centre. For this production, Michael Bay passes the directing baton to Travis Knight, and among the new cast is a tough John Cena in the role of Agent Burns, head of Sector 7.

We met the cast and director of Bumblebee on the red carpet at a fan screening in Leicester Square.

John Cena talked about being part of the Transformers universe, working with the rest of the cast, including the CGI creations, and next year’s WWE.

Hailee Steinfeld spoke with us about the fun of shooting this movie and mentioned her future music projects.

Director Travis Knight talked about forging the relationship between the computer-generated robot and the beautiful Hailee Steinfeld.
