Razed & Confused Goes Digital at Raze Collective online | Theatre review

Four queer artists demonstrate innovation and adaptability as theatre shifts to screen during LGBTQIA+ charity Raze Collective’s new online show Razed & Confused. Showcasing a charismatic live MC paired with visually stunning pre-recorded performances, a new form of viewership is created as the sensation of watching live theatre combines with the feeling of watching a festival of short films. Through a continued upbeat atmosphere combined with professional pieces of work, Razed & Confused is a fun event as well as an important watch.

Four artists were given funding and support to create digital performances in preparation for Raze Collective’s online show. Razed & Confused features individual performances by each artist, accompanied by a live MC (Beau Jangles) introducing each as well as keeping the online audience engaged through continuous banter and musical interludes. The event is a celebration of new artists from the queer community, comprised of young dancers and singers all discussing gender identity and queer experiences. It is a refreshing night to witness voices and work from a non-heteronormative community, as well as to see the online medium being fully utilized to create a polished and professional digital event.

Each piece of work is wildly different from the next, with a strong sense of unique artistic vision and voice. Barbs (Dan McBride) presents a hauntingly beautiful visual film about queer experiences in the countryside. Wesley Dykes showcases an MTV-style lip-sync discussing how Black boy bands and R&B groups shaped the idea of masculinity. Symoné brings a mystical experimental piece filled with strong visuals and movement. The show finally culminates with Brian (Sophie Brian), a lip-sync performer using songs, interviews and book passages to break down the barrier of female gender expectations. Razed & Confused is an all-around compelling and exciting watch, with only a few minor audio faults during the musical intervals of each piece of work.

Razed & Confused is an exciting event that demonstrates a new generation’s artists flourishing, thriving and continuing to let their voices be heard and appreciated. It is a night of fun and talent and an example of the continued power of creativity, even in our lockdown reality.
