Murray defeats Federer to end 104 years British Olympic tennis gold medal drought
Contrary to all expectations, Andy Murray won an extraordinary and historic gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics. World No. 4 and competition’s third seed, Murray played a perfect match against the king of grass Roger Federer.
The Glasgow champion broke the Swiss maestro twice in the first and second set, and once in the third final one to score a clean 6-2 6-1 6-4 victory.
Federer, who holds nearly every tennis record, was seeking the only trophy missing from his palmarès: the single’s Olympic gold medal – he won the double one in 2008 with countryman Wawrinka in Beijing.
Murray had to quickly celebrate his greatest tennis achievement to date, as he is currently playing the mixed doubles match for gold with Laura Robson against Azarenka/Mirnyi.
