Shan Shui Social opens in Victoria with playful art deco design by Macaulay Sinclair
A new dining and bar venue, Shan Shui Social, has opened its doors in Victoria, London, with a design concept unveiled earlier this month by interior architecture and design studio Macaulay Sinclair. Located at 14 Buckingham Palace Road, the 74-cover restaurant aims to offer an intimate and playful atmosphere, distinguishing itself as the cheeky younger sister of the original Shan Shui brand. The project marks a collaboration between Macaulay Sinclair and the team behind Soho’s Singapulah, with the venue first opening in April.
The design for Shan Shui Social draws inspiration from 1920s Shanghainese art deco, blending it with elements reminiscent of a back-alley bar. According to the designers, the intention was to depart from the more formal, Gatsby-esque style of the original Shan Shui venues, instead creating a relaxed environment that is open-to-all. The interiors feature rich textures, mirrored accents, and a prominent feature bar, all contributing to an old world ambience with contemporary touches.
Mike Sinclair, director at Macaulay Sinclair, commented on the project: “We’re excited to have designed and delivered this new venture, after previously working on Singapulah in Soho with the same owners. Shan Shui Social has a unique brand concept that we have thoroughly enjoyed researching and bringing to life, within another central London location. We hope the new space will resonate with fans of the original Shan Shui restaurants, as well as perhaps attract some newer clientele looking for a unique dining experience.”
The ground floor of the venue is dominated by a central bar, partially obscured from the entrance to create a sense of intrigue. Decorative elements include metallic and mirrored finishes, bespoke porcelain mosaic flooring, and custom-designed wallcoverings. The basement level adopts a speakeasy feel, with booths for four set within vaults to offer privacy, and floral motifs referencing the wider Shan Shui identity.
Ellen Chew, Director of Chew On This Group, highlighted the venue’s sustainability efforts: “Sustainability is extremely important to us. The kitchen at Shan Shui Social is fully electric to reduce carbon emissions and provides a safe and comfortable environment for our staff. We also continually strive to source the best ingredients from local producers for our dishes.”
Macaulay Sinclair, established in 2003, has previously worked with hospitality brands such as Hawksmoor, Dishoom, Flat Iron and Caravan. The studio’s characteristics are a research-led approach and focus on historical and local inspiration in its projects.
