London’s Bombolone Doughnuts scoops two Great Taste Awards for Italian-style treats

Bombolone Doughnuts, the Italian-style bakery and café on Whitcomb Street, has received two Great Taste Awards in the 2026 round of the annual food and drink listings. The brand’s Pistachio Tiramisu has earned a single star rating, and their Vanillissimo vanilla bombolone has been given an impressive two stars.

The Great Taste Awards, run by the Guild of Fine Food, assess products through blind tasting by panels of chefs, buyers and food writers. A two-star rating denotes a product judged “outstanding”, while one star indicates a product considered “simply delicious”.

Judges noted the vanilla bombolone’s size, appearance and the balance of its flavours, praising its soft, airy texture and lightly yeasty flavour. They also remarked upon the “well-judged custard” and “controlled sweetness” of the filling, with an overall effect they described as “very pleasing and enjoyable”. Meanwhile, the Pistachio Tiramisu was assessed on its layered construction, portion size and natural pistachio colour, with judges noting the well-balanced combination of espresso, mascarpone and pistachio.

Bombolone was founded in 2025 by Sonia Pash and Paweł Sipta, who explain the idea followed a summer trip to Tuscany where they encountered traditional Italian bomboloni. On returning to London, the pair spent more than six months developing recipes and sourcing ingredients before opening.

Production at the bakery begins at 4am each day, when the dough is made using a slow-proved Italian brioche recipe to produce a softer texture than the conventional American (originally Dutch) style. The doughnuts are then hand-filled with cream and ingredients such as vanilla pods, Italian mascarpone, pistachio cream and chocolate, resulting in a range of flavours that includes Pistachio Amore, Mama Mia Tiramisu!, Crème Brûlée, Dolce Cheesecake, Choco Hazel Bacio, Raspberra and the celebrated Vanillissimo.

The café, which is located a short walk from Trafalgar Square, also sells Italian-inspired brioche sandwiches and a selection of desserts – including the star-winning tiramisu. It became the highest-rated bakery in London on Tripadvisor within a month of opening, and has since appeared in a wide range of prominent food and travel listings.

Commenting on the awards, co-founder Pash said: “We’re absolutely delighted the Great Taste Award judges love our bombolone doughnuts and desserts as much as we do! The Great Taste Awards are a fantastic endorsement of Bombolone’s commitment to craftsmanship, quality ingredients and the art of creating exceptional Italian-inspired treats.”
