Barcelona’s Lasarte to mark 20th anniversary with nine-star chef collaboration dinner

Lasarte, the Barcelona restaurant that became the city’s first to hold three Michelin stars, will stage a one-night collaborative dinner on 16th September to mark 20 years since it opened. The special night, which also falls a decade since the establishment achieved its third Michelin star, will bring together three chefs who hold a total of nine stars between them.

Head chef Paolo Casagrande will be joined for the evening by Eneko Atxa of Azurmendi and Nacho Manzano of Casa Marcial. Each holds three Michelin stars at their respective restaurants, making for an occasion with serious flair.

Atxa’s Azurmendi, located in Larrabetzu in the Basque Country, is famed for its environmental credentials and design that integrates the building with its surrounding landscape to blur the boundaries between interior and exterior space. His cooking draws on Basque produce and techniques alongside contemporary methods. For the Barcelona dinner, although he’ll be working away from his unique setting, he will retain the approach associated with it.

Meanwhile, Manzano’s Casa Marcial sits in the Asturian village of Arriondas in northern Spain. His kitchen is recognised for combining regional Asturian traditions and ingredients with modern technique, and he will contribute dishes reflecting the flavours of the rural region.

Lasarte’s head chef Casagrande, who trained in Europe before joining the Berasategui organisation, has led the kitchen since 2012 and oversaw the restaurant’s progression to three stars. His collaborative dinner this September will see the three culinary experts working together to produce a single menu, drawing on the Basque, Asturian and Catalan influences represented in the room.

Lasarte’s director Martín Berasategui himself holds a total of nine Michelin stars across four restaurants: three at his eponymous flagship in Lasarte-Oria, in the Basque Country, two at MB at the Ritz-Carlton Abama in Tenerife, one at Ola at the Hotel Tayko in Bilbao and three at Lasarte. The Barcelona restaurant, which opened in 2006, took its name from his home town and was awarded its third star in 2017 – the first in the Catalan capital to reach that level.

Multi-chef collaborations of this kind have become an established feature of the fine dining calendar in Spain, offering kitchens the opportunity to exchange techniques and present dishes elsewhere. Lasarte’s on 16th September is particularly exciting, gathering immense talent together for one exclusive showcase of truly top-end cuisine.
