Tate Modern teams up with chef Santiago Lastra for Frida Kahlo-inspired dining experience

Tate Modern has announced a new collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Santiago Lastra, who has designed a limited-edition menu inspired by the gallery’s upcoming exhibition, Frida: The Making of an Icon. The selection will be available at the Tate Modern Restaurant on Level 6 from 25th June to 31st August, coinciding with the run of the exhibition, with the aim of offering visitors a multi-sensory experience that connects Kahlo’s art and legacy with contemporary Mexican cuisine.

Lastra, the founder of Kol in Marylebone, specialises in modern interpretations of dishes from his home country, often using British ingredients. Born in Mexico City – like Frida Kahlo – the chef has cited a personal connection to the artist and her story. His new bespoke menu, which will be served at lunchtime daily and on Friday and Saturday evenings, draws on themes central to Kahlo’s work, including identity, resilience and a sense of place.

The special dishes will be offered as a two-course set for £41, with an option to purchase a combined ticket for lunch and exhibition entry at £66. Tate Members will have priority booking throughout April, and advance reservations are strongly recommended due to anticipated demand. The collaboration is part of Tate Modern’s ongoing series of chef partnerships, which seek to enhance the gallery’s exhibition programme with culinary experiences. Hamish Anderson, CEO of Tate Enterprises, commented: “At Tate Modern, we always look to extend the experience of our exhibitions beyond the confines of the galleries themselves. Santiago’s menu inspired by Frida Kahlo allows visitors to engage with art through food, creating a richer and more immersive visit.”

Lastra explained his approach to the collaboration, stating: “Frida Kahlo has always been deeply important to me – not only as an artist, but as someone who represents the spirit, strength and complexity of Mexican culture. Being born in the same city as her makes this collaboration especially meaningful to me in London. The menu is my way of honouring her legacy, translating the emotions, colours and stories found in her work onto the plate.”
