“The world around her needs to change”: Liz Sargent on Take Me Home at Berlin Film Festival 2026

Director Liz Sargent, whose deeply personal film Take Me Home premiered at the Berlin Film Festival 2026, discussed her powerful narrative. Expanding on her eponymous short, Sargent centres the story on her sister Anna, who has a unique disability and stars in the film. Sargent, whose family includes many adopted children with disabilities, explained her intention to challenge societal assumptions. She asserts that “the world around her needs to change,” advocating for an inclusive society rather than attempting to “fix” disability. Her film artfully balances moments of humour and hope with the harsh realities of caregiving. Ultimately, Sargent invites audiences to imagine a better, more peaceful future by questioning why a grounded vision of acceptance is often perceived as utopian.
