My Morning Jacket at Capitol Theatre

My Morning Jacket at Capitol Theatre performing live
My Morning Jacket at Capitol Theatre | Live review

When My Morning Jacket come to town you know where the place to be is, and last night it was at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, where the band played the first of three sold-out shows at the venue. My Morning Jacket has set off on its Spontaneous Curation Tour which allows fan club members the ability to choose songs that will be played in that night’s show.

At the Capitol Theatre – which has become one of the premier concert venues in New York that provides an intimate small theater experience with stadium style sound and lighting – My Morning Jacket rocked. The band ripped through the set list, playing a plethora of loud, energetic style rock ‘n’roll.

The band, always galvanized, came out of the gates with heavy sounding guitars, with all members running around stage exchanging riffs and riling up the crowd into a frenzy. From the start of the show until the last note, the energy level was at a constant high. The crowd sang along to rock hits like Off The Record, Outta My System and Gideon.

When Jim James is at the microphone serenading the audience with some of the quieter, heart-felt moments, the crowd hangs onto every word that escapes his mouth. When the first notes hit for Mahgeetah, it is truly something to experience: this song was made to be screamed out loud and at the Capitol Theatre it felt like the roof was going to blow off the place – a very special moment bringing everyone together. The band also got a little jammy with the debut of its instrumental number called Octoplasm: it was first heard as part of the band’s self-hypnosis series last year. A nice surprise was also dropped when they performed a breathtaking cover of Erykah Badu’s Tyrone, which was also a first.

My Morning Jacket has put together a must-see live show, and last night at the Capitol Theatre for the first of a three-night run was a truly amazing experience. From start to finish, the band delivered epic moments. This is not your ordinary concert; it is one that leaves a mark and has you aching for more.
