Murray favourite in Miami as Djokovic suffers a shock defeat

Andy Murray is the highest seed player remaining at the Sony Open Championships after world number one Djokovic’s  unorthodox 2-6 4-6 exit. The Serbian was outplayed by Tommy Haas of Germany who took less than an hour to clinch the opening set.

The 15th seed, Haas played some ruthless tennis against the Australian Open Champion as he marched on with seven straight games after going 2-1 at the opening set to make it 6-2 2-0. Djokovic finally managed to get himself on the board once again as he held onto his serve and then broke back to level the score. However, uncharacteristically the 6-times Grand Slam Champion served multiple double faults and rare unforced errors which cost him as Haas went ahead at 4-4. The 34-year old wrapped up the match and recorded his first win over a world number one since 1999. He will now face Gillen Simon, who came through a tough three setter match against Janko Tipsarevic.

Murray had no problems cruising into the quarter finals in Miami with a comfortable 6-2 6-4 over Andreas Seppi. The world number three hasn’t lost a single set so far in this competition and he wasn’t going to let Seppi change that as he broke the Italian in the opening game of the match. Seppi couldn’t threaten the British number one’s serve as the first set was over without the 19th seed hitting a single winner.

The second set was much more competitive and both players had to dig deep to stay on course. The windy conditions caused a higher number of unforced errors than usual, however Murray finally found a way to break in the ninth game as the scores were tied on 4-4.  The US Open Champion held onto his serve to set up a quarter-final match against Marin Cilic of Croatia.
