Massively mad about Marimekko

Massively mad about Marimekko

This week we seem to have a friendly Finnish feeling at The Upcoming, as we delved into the 60-year-old Marimekko that is internationally renowned for its creation of original prints and colours and then shaping them into fabulous furniture, clothing, bags and other accessories.

Halihali fabric immediately generates ideas. Oh I could create towels, dresses, bed clothing, throws and more. With childlike animals depicted simplistically, this bright fabric reminds me of the Moomins and early computer-generated art. The interesting art work could also inspire many a bed time story for a little one or a not so little one!

As well as inspirational pieces and the “ooh” that is different products, they also have brilliantly crafted practical products, such as the weekender tote bag. The fact that it comes in excellent bright blue and great green, is definitely a good thing!

There was so much that caught my eye when gazing through the clothing section. They not only have great designs that scream modern woman, but also have great fabric. The teaming up of fabric and clothing design is a reason why they have had such success. The one that is below is the Piikivi Shirt, made out of breathable cotton. Great for the summer and the colours are bright and luminous with a sense of Picasso entwined.

There is a huge array of fabrics and products to choose from here. I have chosen a few inspirational favourites and, as always, I urge you to delve further here.  Also, if you are in search of a gift, check out their very cool gift wizard where you can work out the perfect gift for a loved one, with a great use of barometers!
