The Fans Strike Back: A Star Wars Fan Exhibition

The Fans Strike Back: A Star Wars Fan Exhibition | Exhibition review

Located in South Kensington, The Fans Strike Back: A Star Wars Fan Exhibition features hundreds of items collected and created by Star Wars fans across the franchise’s history, including costumes, figures and models.

It’s a fascinating look into Star Wars from the perspective of some of its biggest fans, and the presentation of the various items puts the passion that the fandom has for the media juggernaut on clear display. The entire exhibition is permeated with an infectious enthusiasm for the franchise, making for an experience that is sure to immerse fanatics and newbies alike.

The dioramas are a particular highlight of the display, combining toys and playsets with lovingly-crafted environments and monsters, capturing the action from the silver screen in perfect miniature form. The extensive figure collections also chart the cultural impact Star Wars has had on its audience and the toy world as a whole, reflecting how toymaking has responded to shifts in both popular tastes and advancements in engineering.

On a larger scale, it’s also interesting to get a glimpse into the process of making the films through the displays and explanations of various costumes, props and effects, and the exhibition is set up to facilitate some great photo opportunities with these pieces of cinematic history across several iconic set pieces, from swamps to deserts to Emperor Palpatine’s big chair (which is very comfortable).

The exhibition also features a VR experience, purchased separately: while it’s not explicitly Star Wars-themed, it does put visitors behind the controls of a spaceship that hurtles through the galaxy. At £7.50 for a few minutes, it’s perhaps a little pricey for what it is, but it’s also a fun diversion that shows off some fancy new technology in a way that feels very Star Wars.

Overall, The Fans Strike Back: A Star Wars Fan Exhibition is a brilliant experience, celebrating a franchise that has captured the imaginations of people the world over, as well as paying tribute to the fans themselves. Superfans will obviously get a lot out of the show, but the passion on display is sure to win over even the most casual of Star Wars fans.
