“It’s the best thing out of Africa right now”: Adesua Etomi, Tobi Bakre and Chioma Akpotha on Gangs of Lagos

Gangs of Lagos is the first African Original movie from Prime Video. Helmed by queen of action filmmaker Jade Osiberu, its high production values bring to screen this gritty and visceral crime-thriller, centred around a group of childhood friends who each face their own struggles to survive on the streets of Isale Eko, Lagos, with impressive set pieces and drama that is nonetheless grounded in the reality of life in the neighbourhood.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to the movie’s lead actors, Adesua Etomi, Tobi Bakre and Chioma Akpotha, while they were in the UK, about their various roles in the film, what it was like being on-set and working with the director, and how the depiction of cyclical ganglands violence is balanced with touching human stories of love and resilience.

Gangs of Lagos is released on Prime Video on 7th April 2023.
