Powerful and unflinchingly honest, Love & Rage: Munroe Bergdorf follows the trans activist and model, documenting three years of her life as she sees the increasing dangers and difficulties trans people face in modern society unfold. It’s a raw recollection of her childhood, her trauma, her grief, and the process of confronting her demons as she prepares to write her memoir. Beyond that, the documentary cleverly recreates scenes from Bergdorf’s childhood, providing metaphorical lenses into the varied emotions Bergdorf has felt over the years regarding her identity, sexuality, and role in creating a safe and accepting space for the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s a heartfelt and vulnerable journey, one that deserves to be platformed at the inaugural SXSW London.

The Upcoming caught up with Bergdorf herself, where she presented an introduction to the film and expressed what she wanted people to take away from the feature. She also spoke about the significance of premiering at such an explosive event.

Producer Andee Ryder and Olivia Cappuccini discussed some of the behind-the-scenes creative process of Love & Rage: Munroe Bergdorf. Ryder spoke about the conversations that had to be cut from the final picture to allow for a seamless and cohesive structure to Bergdorf’s journey. Cappuccini highlighted the importance of choosing Bergdorf as the subject of a documentary, especially in amplifying trans stories in a politically charged moment in time.

Some of the special guests stopped by to share their support for the film. Hannah Jones, who premiered her TV series What It Feels Like for a Girl earlier in the festival, commented on the positive press for the series. She discussed her excitement for all the diverse trans stories headlining SXSW London.

Ella Morgan emphasised the pressures trans women in media face to represent and her admiration for Bergdorf’s continuous efforts.

Finally, singer and SXSW alumna Kate Nash, a big fan of Munroe, expressed what drew her to the model and how crucial Munroe’s story is in elevating minority voices.
