Mayfair fish and chip shop offers free meals to black cab drivers after Oxford Street pedestrianisation

The Mayfair Chippy, the fish and chip shop with branches in Mayfair and Knightsbridge, is giving free takeaway fish and chips to London black cab drivers this November in response to the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street earlier this week. The restaurant says the new shopping district rules restrict drivers’ routes when they are already under significant pressure from rideshare apps, so they are hoping to feed them up in solidarity. Alongside the free meals for drivers, the team are also running a buy-one-get-one-free offer for customers who arrive by black cab, helping to put some money back in cabbies’ pockets.

The free November meals will be available every Tuesday from the 3rd to the 24th from the Mayfair restaurant on North Audley Street. They are limited to the first 50 cabbies each Tuesday for takeaway only, although they can be collected at any time of day. Drivers must show a valid badge or licence to claim a meal.

The customer offer gives diners ordering a Mayfair Classic – the restaurant’s signature dish – another one for free. It runs Monday to Friday from 26th October to 31st December and can be used by diners eating in at both the Mayfair restaurant and the Knightsbridge site on Brompton Road. A minimum black cab journey spend of £20 is required (which can include driver tips), and customers must show a black cab receipt (paper or app), dated the same day.

The initiative is a wonderful way to celebrate London’s cabbies, who have been ferrying tourists and residents around our great city in one guise or another since the 1600s. And what better way to honour a historic British service than with fish and chips?
