Jones’ Crumpets to open first café on Golborne Road in Notting Hill in November

Jones’ Crumpets, the London crumpet maker founded by Ian Endfield in 2017, will open its first café in November at 44 Golborne Road in Notting Hill. The site will give the business, which has until now sold its crumpets through delis, restaurants and market stalls, a permanent base where customers can eat them cooked fresh on the griddle.

The menu will be split between larger crumpet-based dishes and a grab-and-go counter, with both sweet and savoury toppings. The sit-down offering consists of a breakfast dish, two savoury dishes to be served from morning into the afternoon, and one sweet option, with the menu following the seasonality.

Each dish can be ordered on any of the brand’s four crumpet varieties. These are Classic; Double Cheese, made with parmesan and strong cheddar; Cheese & Chive, which combines the same two cheeses with chives; and Dark Chocolate, which has a molten centre of single-origin 71% dark chocolate.

For quicker service, crumpets will be paired with a rotating selection of toppings made on the premises. Drinks will consist of coffee from the roaster Allpress and a short list of soft drinks.

The interior has a pared-back design drawing on early-to-mid 20th-century styles, using a neutral colour palette and materials including quarry tiles and birch joinery. The room is arranged around a large stainless steel counter, where customers will be able to watch coffee being brewed and crumpets being cooked and topped. A mural running along the walls takes its inspiration from German Expressionism and the public art commissioned by the Works Progress Administration, the US government agency that funded artists during the Great Depression.

Jones’ Crumpets began with a supper club held in Endfield’s flat, at which crumpets featured in every course. The crumpets have since been supplied to restaurants including Ottolenghi’s Rovi and are stocked by delis such as La Fromagerie. They are also sold online with nationwide delivery and at market stalls including Primrose Hill Food Market and Marylebone Farmers’ Market. Elsewhere in London, they appear on the menus at Fortnum & Mason’s Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon and Café Jikoni at V&A East.

The Golborne Road café will be the first location dedicated solely to the brand. Its menu centres on crumpets as the base for full meals as well as the more familiar buttered snack.
