Xi Home Dumplings Bay hosts hands-on mooncake workshops in Spitalfields for Mid-Autumn Festival

Xi Home Dumplings Bay in Spitalfields is hosting a series of mooncake-making workshops throughout October to mark the Mid-Autumn Festival. The masterclasses, priced at £49.46 per person, will take place every Sunday from 3 pm to 5 pm at the restaurant’s Blossom Street location. The sessions will be led by Head Chef Minnie Wang and founder Wenjun Xiang and are designed to introduce participants to the traditional Chinese delicacy in a modern, hands-on format.

Xi Home Dumplings Bay restaurant is focused on authentic Northeastern Chinese dumplings, bringing a genuine handcrafted dumpling experience to the city.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated in many East and Southeast Asian cultures, typically involves gatherings with family and friends, moon-viewing, and the sharing of mooncakes — round pastries traditionally filled with lotus seed paste and salted egg yolk. Xi Home’s workshops aim to offer a contemporary take on this tradition by teaching attendees how to make dessert-style mooncakes with a variety of fillings.

Each session includes an introduction to the history and cultural significance of mooncakes, followed by step-by-step instructions on how to prepare them. Participants will make two types of mooncakes during the class, which they can eat at the end of the session. The workshops also include a complimentary drink and conclude with a certificate of participation.

In addition to the classes, Xi Home Dumplings Bay is offering mooncake gift sets for purchase. The sets, which cost £35 and are available for pick-up or delivery until the end of October, include six mooncakes in a range of flavours: Pistachio Lava, Classic Egg Yolk, Japanese Matcha, and Mixed Berry.

The mooncake masterclasses, taking place on the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th October, replace the restaurant’s usual dumpling-making classes for the whole month.
