Don Julio Tequila and Panaderia Rosetta bring Día de Muertos to London with bakery pop-up and speakeasy bar

In honour of Día de Muertos, Don Julio Tequila will be hosting a three-day cultural event in London this October – and they’re bringing Pan de Muerto from the famous Panaderia Rosetta bakery in Mexico City with them. Going by the name of Panadería Don Julio, this taste of Mexico will include a pop-up bakery and bar experience, running from 31st October to 2nd November at Toklas Bakery off the Strand.
Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a significant Mexican holiday that honours deceased loved ones. Far from being a sombre occasion, it’s a colourful celebration with traditions such as building vibrant ofrendas (altars to the dead), incorporating photos, favourite foods and flowers (usually marigolds). Families also adorn their homes with with calaveras (sugar skulls) and papel picado (festive perforated paper decorations), and will usually visit cemeteries to clean and decorate their relatives’ gravesites, tell stories of the departed and share music and food.
Panadería Rosetta, the bakery joining forces with Don Julio Tequila for the event, is led in the Mexican capital by Michelin-starred chef Elena Reygadas, who was named the World’s Best Female Chef in 2023, This will be the brand’s UK debut, presenting its signature Pan de Muerto. The sweet bread, traditionally baked during Día de Muertos, is scented with orange blossom and holds cultural significance as an offering to the dead.
During the daytime, visitors to Panadería Don Julio can participate in cocktail masterclasses and browse a curated selection of Mexican homewares provided by Milagros, a shop based on Columbia Road that specialises in Mexican imports. The classes offer a hands-on introduction to tequila-based cocktails, showcasing Don Julio’s spirits in a more educational setting. In the evening, the venue will transition into a speakeasy-style bar. Signature drinks will be served by bartenders from Handshake Speakeasy, a Mexico City bar that was named the World’s #1 Bar by 50 Best Bars in 2024. The night-time sessions will also feature a line-up of DJs, creating an immersive nightlife experience.
Entry is open to the public, with scheduled activities throughout the day and evening.
