Sumo, sushi and sake come together in immersive Tokyo Nights event launching in London

Sumo wrestling, sushi, and sake will converge in a new immersive cultural event launching in Greenwich’s Borough Hall next summer. Titled Tokyo Nights, the experience will bring together live performances by four former professional sumo wrestlers, Japanese cuisine and themed installations inspired by the neon-lit streets of Tokyo.

The series marks the first time such a combination of traditional Japanese sport and interactive dining has been staged in the UK. It follows the recent Grand Sumo Tournament, held in London at the Royal Albert Hall for the first time in 34 years, which generated renewed interest in the sport among British audiences. Tokyo Nights is curated by a team with experience in large-scale immersive experiences, including past projects such as Secret Cinema and The Grand Expedition. They describe it as a hybrid of sporting spectacle, theatre and culinary experience, with the sumo ring, or dohyō, serving as the central focus, around which guests will be seated. Attendees will have the option of choosing between premium seating close to the dohyō or more casual balcony seating. Their dinner menu will feature high-end sushi and sake pairings, along with cocktails designed to complement the experience.

The production will also feature artistic contributions from David Sharibani, a Tokyo-based, London-born artist known as Lord K2. Sharibani, who has had rare behind-the-scenes access to sumo stables and the Kokugikan arena in Japan, aims to bring an authentic representation of the sport and its culture to the UK capital. “Tokyo and London are both cultural powerhouses – different in character but alike in creative spirit,” he said. “The two cities have long respected and inspired each other, and presenting Sumo in London continues that dialogue. Years ago, Sumo captured the British imagination when it aired on Channel 4 and became a cult classic. Now we have the chance to relive that excitement – this time over dinner at Tokyo Nights, with the grit, ritual and flavour of the Kokugikan itself.”
