Fatt Pundit to celebrate Lunar New Year 2026 with limited-edition Red Momo dumpling in Covent Garden

Fatt Pundit to celebrate Lunar New Year 2026 with limited-edition Red Momo dumpling in Covent Garden

Fatt Pundit, specialising in Indo-Chinese cuisine, will be marking Lunar New Year 2026 with a limited-edition menu item at its Covent Garden branch. The festive special, called The Red Momo, will be available from the 17th to the 22nd of February, coinciding with the start of the Year of the Horse. The initiative aims to celebrate the cultural significance of the Lunar New Year and offer London diners a seasonal culinary experience.

The Red Momo is a variation on Fatt Pundit’s signature dumplings, featuring Sichuan chicken seasoned with peppercorns, encased in a red-hued dough. The dish is served in a burnt butter, beetroot, and smoked tomato sauce. The choice of red is symbolic, referencing the colour’s association with luck and prosperity in Lunar New Year celebrations. While the Red Momo will only be served at the Covent Garden location, Fatt Pundit also operates a site in Soho.

Fatt Pundit was established in 2019 by brothers Huzefa and Hamza Sajawal, who were born in Mumbai. The restaurant’s cuisine draws on the Hakka Chinese community’s influence in Kolkata, blending Chinese cooking techniques with Indian spices. This style, known as Indo-Chinese cuisine, developed when Chinese immigrants settled in Kolkata over a century ago. Since opening, the restaurant has sought to introduce this fusion of flavours to the London dining scene. The name plays on a combination of the common Chinese surname Fatt with the Indian word Pundit (which means a scholar).

Fatt Pundit’s Covent Garden branch is located in central London, an area known for its diverse food offerings and proximity to many of the city’s cultural celebrations. The introduction of the Red Momo forms part of a wider trend among London restaurants to create limited-time dishes and menus in recognition of major cultural events, reflecting the city’s multicultural character.
