New Greek restaurant Maza to bring Athenian taverna spirit to Mayfair this March

A new Greek restaurant, Maza, is scheduled to open its doors on Bruton Place this March. The venture is led by restaurateurs Christina Mouratoglou and Adrien Carré, known for their acclaimed Notting Hill establishments Mazi and Suzi Tros. This marks the couple’s first restaurant outside Notting Hill, and aims to bring the atmosphere and communal dining traditions of a 1980s Athenian taverna to central London.

Maza, which translates to “everyday bread” in ancient Greek, will offer diners a menu inspired by family recipes and the culinary heritage of Athens. The restaurant is designed by David Archer, whose previous projects include Chiltern Firehouse and The Peninsula. It will accommodate 90 guests, with a mix of counter seating, tables and bar spaces. The interiors are described as balancing contemporary design with authentic Greek touches, featuring natural materials and handcrafted details. Upstairs, there’s a vinyl listening bar playing 1970s and 1980s Greek records, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of classic Athenian tavernas.

A key feature is the open fire kitchen, where guests can observe the cooking process from the counter. The menu will include homemade breads baked in a wood-fired oven, tarama, sea urchin pasta, spit-roasted lamb shoulder, pork belly gyros and a variety of seafood dishes. Fish will be sourced daily from boats landing the night before, and prepared in various styles such as raw, grilled or steamed with lemon oil in the Corfiot tradition. Other dishes include steak tartare with sundried tomatoes and graviera cheese ice cream, and Grandmama’s Disco Fries topped with shredded veal kokkinisto.

Desserts will also reference Greek culinary traditions, with offerings such as a Pistachio Baklava Ice Cream Sandwich and kazanDibi, a caramelised burnt milk cream. Each guest will be welcomed with maza, the ancient Greek “everyday bread”, as a gesture of hospitality.

Carré has curated what is described as the world’s largest exclusively Greek wine list, with more than 150 wines, and the drinks menu also includes cocktails made with Greek ingredients and the traditional tsipouro ritual, in which a shot is served with mezze to begin the meal.

Lunch and dinner will be served seven days a week. According to the founders, Maza “represents the next evolution for the Mouratoglou–Carré culinary family, building on the pioneering success of Mazi and Suzi Tros while offering something completely new: a nostalgic celebration of Athens that invites London diners to experience Greek hospitality as it was meant to be.”
