Brasserie Angelica and Gambit Bar bring new dining and nightlife to Fitzrovia’s The Newman hotel
On Sunday, two new hospitality venues from Kinsfolk & Co officially opened their doors in The Newman hotel in Fitzrovia. Brasserie Angelica and Gambit Bar, located at the intersection of Newman and Goodge Street, offer both locals and visitors new dining and social destinations in the heart of the city.
Brasserie Angelica, at street level, is a 100-cover all-day eatery led by executive chef Christian Turner. The restaurant serves a menu influenced by Northern European cuisine, focusing on classic dishes using produce from London suppliers and UK producers. It is open daily from breakfast to late evening and features a dedicated bar area, as well as a 24-seat terrace for outdoor dining. For those seeking a quicker lunch option, a sandwich trolley circulates during weekday lunchtimes.
The menu has starters such as Gravlax with Fermented Cucumber Salad, a Västerbotten Cheese Tart with Smoked Onion Purée and Broad Beans and a West Coast Salad with shrimp, mussels crab, and mushrooms. Main courses feature a Sutton Hoo Chicken Pie with Cep Cream Sauce, a Confit Duck Leg with Haricot Beans and Parsley Salad and Double-tranche of Halibut. The wood-fire grill offers a selection of premium meat and seafood, accompanied by sides like Potato and Sprat Gratin and Leeks Vinaigrette. Desserts range from Crème Caramel with Toasted Brioche to a Blueberry Tart with Lemon Curd, as well as smaller sweet bites such as Cardamom Buns and Canelé.
Private dining options are available in the Talland and Little Talland rooms, seating 20 and 12 guests respectively. The interiors, created by Lind + Almond, draw on Fitzrovia’s history, blending Victorian and Art Deco elements with a monochrome palette. The design references local figures such as writer Nancy Cunard and furniture designer Gerald Summers.
Meanwhile, directly below the brasserie, Gambit Bar operates from Tuesday to Saturday evenings for up to 60 guests. Overseen by Eder Neto, The Newman’s head of food and drink, the venue offers a menu of creative cocktails, all of which can be made alcohol-free, alongside draught beers from London breweries Kernel and Two Tribes. Bar snacks are provided by Christian Turner and come in the form of flatbreads, oysters and Danish cold cuts (rullepølse).
Here, the design pays tribute to Fitzrovia’s bohemian past, with inspiration taken from artist Percy Wyndham Lewis, founder of the Vorticist movement. Features include a coffered ceiling, abstract geometric details and a living copper bar top. The venue also hosts events such as in-house DJ nights and regular chess evenings.
Brasserie Angelica and Gambit Bar are the latest additions to The Newman, where the team explain their aim is “to deliver thoughtful excellence and remain a conscientious, ethical business for years to come”.
