Frida Kahlo immersive exhibition opens in Chelsea, blending rare artifacts, feminist legacy, and Mexican cuisine

A new immersive exhibition dedicated to Mexican artist Frida Kahlo has opened at Mestizo Chelsea, London, running until the 10^th of April. The initiative, titled Frida Kahlo: Women Experiences, is officially supported by UN Women and aims to explore the personal, artistic, and feminist legacy of one of the 20^th century’s most influential figures. The experience is held in the downstairs space of Mestizo Chelsea, located on King’s Road, and combines visual art, authentic Mexican cuisine, and a message of empowerment.

The exhibition offers visitors access to never-before-seen photographs and authentic personal letters belonging to Frida Kahlo, providing insight into her private life and creative process. These materials, rarely exhibited outside Mexico, provide a deeper understanding of Kahlo’s relationships, emotional landscape, and enduring influence as a feminist icon.

Following the art experience, guests have the option to participate in a five-course Mexican tasting menu inspired by the wedding banquet of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The menu, curated by Mestizo Chelsea, reinterprets dishes served at their 1929 wedding, offering a historical perspective on early 20^th-century Mexican cuisine. A tasting of mezcal and Teremana tequila is also included, highlighting traditional Mexican spirits.

The project was developed in partnership with UN Women and seeks to use Kahlo’s legacy to promote conversations around gender equality and the eradication of gender-based violence. 

Mestizo Chelsea, which opened in 2004 by Roberto Alvarado and Marysol Sánchez, is focused on Mexican culinary and cultural traditions. With this event, the restaurant continues its expansion into cultural programming, aiming to serve as a hub for both the Mexican community and those interested in Mexican heritage.
