La Maritxu to launch limited-edition popcorn Basque cheesecake for National Cheesecake Day

London-based Basque cheesecake maker La Maritxu will sell a limited-edition Popcorn Cheesecake for one day only on 30th July 2026, to mark National Cheesecake Day. The one-off flavour will be available exclusively through pre-order, with only 200 cheesecakes produced and reservations open via the company’s website.

The cheesecake combines the savoury, buttery flavours of freshly popped popcorn with the recipe La Maritxu uses for its standard Basque cheesecake. The flavour is the first of its kind and follows the traditional Basque baking method, which produces a caramelised exterior and a soft centre.

Customers who place orders will be able to collect them on 30th July from any of La Maritxu’s London locations. These include stores at Kingly Court, Connaught Village, Greenwich and Coal Drops Yard, the most recent of the company’s outlets to open.

La Maritxu was founded in 2021 by Ignacio and Lucia, a husband-and-wife team, and specialises in Basque cheesecake. The business has expanded across several sites in the capital since its launch. The Popcorn Cheesecake is the latest in a series of new products from the company, which recently worked with Bertotti to develop a Basque cheesecake ice cream.

Basque cheesecake, also known as burnt cheesecake, originated in San Sebastián in Spain’s Basque Country and is distinguished from other styles by its scorched, caramelised top and creamy interior. The dish is baked at a high temperature and typically served without a crust, and has grown in popularity in London and other cities in recent years.

National Cheesecake Day is an informal food-themed occasion observed annually on 30th July, and is marked by a number of bakeries and dessert businesses with special products and promotions.

The special will be sold in a medium size for £17. Because production is limited to 200 cheesecakes, the company anticipates that stock will sell quickly. All orders must be reserved in advance, with pre-orders opening three weeks before National Cheesecake Day.
