Pizza Pilgrims launches limited-edition yellow tomato pizza to mark Piennolo del Vesuvio harvest season

Pizza Pilgrims has introduced a limited-edition pizza built around yellow Piennolo del Vesuvio tomatoes across all of its UK pizzerias. Available from 27th July until 30th August, the It’s Yellow Piennolo Tomato Season! pizza has been timed to coincide with the annual harvest of the variety, which is grown on the volcanic slopes surrounding Mount Vesuvius in the Campania region of southern Italy. The pizza replaces the red tomato base typically found on traditional Neapolitan pizzas with a yellow one made from the special tomatoes. It’s topped with spicy Italian sausage, smoked provola mozzarella, roasted red onions, fresh basil and olive oil.

Piennolo del Vesuvio tomatoes are a protected variety that’s less widely exported than its red counterpart and is generally noted for a sweeter flavour profile, which producers attribute to the mineral content of the area’s volcanic soil. The tomatoes are traditionally harvested in bunches and hung to store, a practice that gives the variety its name – piennolo derives from the Neapolitan word for a hanging cluster.

The UK pizza chain source all of their tomatoes from Solania, whom they have worked with for a number of years. The family producer grows the yellow variety on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, continuing cultivation methods passed down across generations.

Pizza Pilgrims was founded in 2012 by brothers Thom and James Elliot, who began by selling their pies from a converted three-wheeled van in London’s Berwick Street market before opening a permanent site in Soho. The company has since expanded to a chain of pizzerias in London and other UK cities, and has built much of its supply chain around small-scale Italian producers, including flour millers, mozzarella dairies and tomato growers in the Naples area.

Seasonal and limited-run pizzas have become a recurring feature of the company’s menu, with previous specials tied to ingredient availability and regional Italian traditions. The yellow Piennolo pizza follows in the same vein, with availability restricted to the five-week window that broadly corresponds to the harvest period for the variety.
